Excluded from the Ghetto, the ‘Aryan’ Chłodna Street divided the Warsaw ghetto into the northern part (known as the ‘Large Ghetto’) and the southern one (the ‘Small Ghetto’). In the foreground on the left are the First Baptist Church in Warsaw at 25 Waliców Street. In the middle of Chłodna Street is Father Jerzy Square with a stone obelisk commemorating Jerzy Popiełuszko and a crucifix opposite Zygmunt Lewin’s house at 20 Chłodna Street (built 1913 to a design of Józef Napoleon Czerwiński and Juliusz Heppner). Lewin’s house was known in the Ghetto as the ‘White House’, being the residence of, among others, Head of the Jewish Council, Adam Czerniaków, and Commander of the Jewish Order Service, Col Józef Szeryński. Beyond Lewin’s house, to the north, is a relic of Ghetto development at 13/29 Ogrodowa Street, and further into the background, a fragment of a relic at 145 Solidarności Avenue (formerly 73 Leszno Street). In the clearance between the apartment blocks is Żelazna Street with relics of Ghetto development on the odd-numbered side (nos. 89, 91), which at this stretch marked the Ghetto’s western border. Further up to the northwest is a relic at 50 Ogrodowa Street. In the direct vicinity of the apartment block at 22 Chłodna Street stands a concrete marker commemorating one of the Ghetto’s twenty one gates, with the course of the Ghetto boundary marked on the pavement (a 2008 installation by Eleonora Bergman and Tomasz Lec). At the intersection of Chłodna and Żelazna Streets — invisible here — was the wooden footbridge that connected the Small and Large Ghettos from January till autumn 1942.
