The composition of the painting is well thought out and cleared of unnecessary detail, while the clear contours and flat colour fields resemble a poster. The frame for the presented scene is a curtain, like in a theatre. It is formed by the hair that marks out the contour of the absent face. The viewer looks at the picture from the perspective of this person and identifies with them. The male figure in the centre of the canvas has pupils made out of mirrors, which literally means looking at oneself in someone else’s eyes. Unlike earlier works, where the artist used anecdote, the situation here is understated and marked by an emotional tension. The painting does not present a specific story but is a record of mental states. In it, Bogacka speaks ‘of dreams, when something appears to be, the images are layered, and you get lost... I don’t try to make sense in paintings, but to capture that moment of being lost’.
