Karolina Bielawska, Zuza Golińska. THE MEGALITH ON THE ZACHĘTA PROJECT ROOM’S SUMMER TERRACE 2017

27.05 – 30.09.2017 Karolina Bielawska, Zuza Golińska. THE MEGALITH ON THE ZACHĘTA PROJECT ROOM’S SUMMER TERRACE 2017

Zachęta Project Room

For several years, the Summer Terrace of the Zachęta Project Room has become a space for artistic installations open to the public, local residents, and passers-by. In 2015, such installations were created by Jaśmina Wójcik, together with Jacek Gądek, while in 2016 it was Michał Mioduszewski. This year’s arrangement was designed as a resting place for the public, a space for concerts and meetings on the gallery’s terrace.

Megalith by Karolina Bielawska and Zuza Golińska is a spatial installation built with stones and plants. It defines a certain area, territory, or trail. In their domestic form, stones appear in private gardens, parks, and allotments. But because they were once used to construct megalithic structures, such as Stonehenge – and also as the first tools – they are perceived as objects with magical power. The composition on the ZPR’s terrace consists of a circular road-installation. It is a friendly space for pedestrians, children, and the residents of neighbouring homes, drawing upon the primeval and the natural. Its character changes, however, as a result of painting interference. The painted stones inside the circle define the boundary of the tamed and friendly zone. Their external sides are located outside this area. In this way, the installation is thus transformed into an abstract form, recalling contemporary reality and its divisions and boundaries.
