The second part of the exhibition encompasses less known works by the artist, above all painting and photography which also convey Dziaczkowski’s characteristic montage way of seeing and presenting reality, even though they deal with quite different themes. In comparison to the collages, here one can detect a more serious and personal approach, a turning to those closest to him, to his friends and family histories mixed with icons of pop-culture or myths from road movies. A special place here is occupied by works in the series A Return to Nigeria, the place where Dziaczkowski’s grandfather lived and worked. An additional component of the exhibition is photographic documentation of the artist’s studio on Inżynierska Street made by Jan Smaga after Dziaczkowski’s death, which will be shown for the first time in Zachęta.

Jan Dziaczkowski was born in 1983 in Warsaw. In 2007, he graduated from the Painting Department of the Warsaw Academy of the Fine Arts, under the supervision of Prof. Krzysztof Wachowiak. A painter, photographer, illustrator and creator of collages – in the course of just a few years, Dziaczkowski emerged as one of the most talented young Polish artists. He won special recognition for his collages produced in traditional techniques, which are currently to be found in numerous private collections, and also the illustrations that he created for music, social and cultural magazines, such as those for “Machina”, “Architektura”, “A4”, “Ha!art” and “Przekroj”. Dziaczkowski also played an active part in the artistic life of Warsaw; in the years 2004-2007, he was a co-creator of the informal group the Nuku Studio; and is also the author of installations realised in the clubs PKP Powiśle and Chłodna 25. He died in September 2011, while climbing in the Tatra Mountains.

After his death, care of his archive is being taken by the Fundacja Sztuk Wizualnych, the publisher of the album Jan Dziaczkowski. Collages published in 2013.
