Christian Hutzinger’s W/W

18.05 – 31.12.2013 Christian Hutzinger’s W/W

Zachęta – National Gallery of Art

curator: Jacek Malinowski
collaboration on the part of Zachęta: Julia Leopold

Christian Hutzinger’s W/W is an installation that combines painting and architecture. In a previously unused space, the artist has placed his trademark elements: a letter, a geometric figure, and colour. These play with the ‘inconvenient’ architecture of a basement niche, stressing its function as an ‘entrance/exit’ or ‘introduction’ to what awaits inside. The letter ‘W’, with its many meanings, is a sign that the artist plays with on every possible level.

Christian Hutzinger’s works exist in unexpected conditions and circumstances. It is their paradoxical specificity that, filling a space, they do not occupy it. Moreover, involving and engaging a space, they in fact create it anew. Hutzinger’s is an art where the term ‘no limits’ has multiple – literal and metaphoric – meanings. He can be considered as an abstractionist and instillation artist. He can also be a painter of architecture and a painter in architecture: a symbolist and decorator of the present. Whatever the case, his works invariably mark their presence in an unmistakable fashion: dominating, stigmatising, promising potentialities.

Christian Hutzinger (born 1966 in Vienna) has shown his work at some of Austria’s leading art spaces as well as in Japan, China, Czech Republic, India, or Belgium. In Poland, Hutzinger participated in the exhibition Abstraction Applied at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Warsaw in January 2013. The site-specific installation designed for Zachęta inaugurates a new exhibition venue in the gallery’s underground space.
