Solidarności Avenue (formerly Gen Karola Świerczewskiego Street, formerly Leszno Street, nonexistent at this stretch prior to 1945). In the foreground, a fragment of the Radziwiłł Palace (Independence Museum, formerly Lenin Museum). Above, by the left edge of the image, besides the hood of the silver car parked on the pavement at Bielańska Street, concrete marker commemorating one of the Ghetto’s twenty one gates, with the course of the Ghetto boundary marked on the pavement (a 2008 installation by Eleonora Bergman and Tomasz Lec). To the right, alongside Solidarności Avenue, a relic of Ghetto development (beige facade, red-tile roof). Last in the frontage, the white building of the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute (formerly Institute of Judaic Studies and the Main Judaic Library) at 5/7 Tłomackie Street (built 1928–1936 to a design of Edward Eber). Then the blue high-rise where the Great Synagogue at Tłomackie Street used to stand (built 1876–1878 to a design of Leandro Marconi, blown up on orders of ss Gen Jürgen Stropp on 16 May 1943 to mark the crushing of the Ghetto Uprising). In the middle of the street, facing the clearance between buildings, is the ‘Fat Kate’ municipal water well (built 1786 to a design of Szymon Bogumił Zug) at Tłomackie Street. The second building beyond the exit of Bankowy Square, at 81 S0lidarności Avenue (formerly 1 Leszno Street), is where the Jewish Adult Hospital was housed following its relocation to the Ghetto (originally at the Czyste suburb). Further up, by the claret-coloured building, is the tenement at 93 Solidarności Avenue (formerly 13 Leszno Street), where the Office Against Profiteering and Speculation (known as ‘The Thirteen’) was located during the Ghetto era. On the horizon on the left, the Palace of Culture and Science, the location of which corresponds with the south-eastern end of the Ghetto. On the horizon on the right, the axa high-rise at Chłodna Street, near the Ghetto’s western border.
