The group Małe Instrumenty (Small Instruments) is a unique phenomenon in this part of Europe whose work has been from the outset closely associated with that of Antonisz. For in its music the band makes use solely of small instruments: professional instruments of limited dimensions, toy instruments, curious musical discoveries and a whole host of other weird and wonderful little objects which emit sounds. In this way, the music they create has a unique palette of flavours, sometimes it is beautiful and artistic, sometimes it is surprising and innovative, and sometimes it lays bare the imperfections of sounds and celebrates their limitations. All of this means that the group is constantly confronted by the necessity of seeking for new solutions.
The band was founded by Paweł Romańczuk who in 2005 started to collected his first instruments (to date he has amassed about 300 sources of sound!). The influence of Antonisz is evident from the outset since the band’s first concert, played in 2007 during the Era New Horizons festival, comprised of their renditions of the director’s compositions. It was equally the works of Antonisz that were the subject of the band’s first CD, Antonisz (2009). Since then, the band has been continuously playing concerts and realizing new ideas, such as interpretations of film music, accompanying silent films, and creating their own compositions for films, sound illustrations to audio-books and concerts of improvised music. Their D.I.Y. approach to the making and playing of music, and blending of home-made with high-art makes their work very close in spirit to the heritage of Antonisz, who continues to remain a significant source of inspiration for the band.
In the course of the 4 years of their existence the band has released the following CDs: Antonisz (2009); Sekretne życie krasnali w wielkich kapeluszach (The Secret Life of Dwarves in Great Hats) (audiobook, 2009); Małe Instrumenty grają Chopina (2010) (wydana z książką P. Romańczuka o historii toy piano) (Small Instruments Play Chopin released with a book by P. Romańczuk on the history of the toy piano; Moich 8 słów (My 8 Words) (2012); Chemia i Fizyka (Chemistry and Physics) (2012); Katarynka (2012).
