Joanna Piotrowska
Self-defence

Zachęta – National Gallery of Art
4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. | performance, 30 min, language no problem, admission included in entrance fee

Joanna Piotrowska works primarily with photography and film. In her practice, she focuses in interpersonal structures and their relationship to wider systems – including politics, economics, social and cultural life. The artist explores past and present and uses her surrounding to uncover the power imbalance and psychological drama of human relations, as well as the anxiety and tensions generated by the domestic space. She translates everyday gestures and conventional movement practices (such as self-defense) into new scenarios, lending them an almost caricature-like quality.

Performance premiere took place at Art Basel 2017 for Dawid Radziszewski Gallery.
