Peter Land Naked

15.06 – 18.08.2013 Peter Land Naked

Zachęta – National Gallery of Art

curator: Magda Kardasz
cooperation: Katarzyna Kołodziej

Zachęta – National Gallery of Art will present the first individual exhibition in Poland of the work of Peter Land – one of the best-known contemporary artists from Denmark. The show will comprise a selection of projects from different periods of the artist's activity. Major part of the show will consist of films and video installations created from the mid-90s, in which the author appears in different costumes and slapstic situations (documentation of personal failures and their constant overcoming). These apparently funny and self-ironic films touch serious existential issues – they speak about the condition of contemporary man and the artist in a world of unstable structures and ever-changing values. In the Warsaw exposition, these films will be juxtaposed with sculptural installations. Again, these too oscillate between tragedy and comedy, but some new elements will also to be found in this group of works: education perceived as an oppressive social mechanism, referring to symbols taken from fairy tales (Alice in Wonderland) and literature. The newest work that will be presented in Zachęta is an on-going series of watercolours entitled An Attempt at Reconstructing my Elementary School Class, Based on my Memory.

The exhibition will take place in the major rooms of the Zachęta gallery. It will be accompanied by an exhibition guide published both in Polish and English. We are also planning an extensive educational programme around the exhibition such as: guided tours, workshops for children and adults, as well as lectures on contemporary Danish culture. We also expect to have a broad film program, presenting masterpieces of Danish cinema (screenings will take place in Zachęta's multimedia room). We plan to co-operate with the Danish Cultural Institute in Warsaw.

    Exhibition of Contemporary Danish Art

The exhibition, held under the auspices of the foreign ministers of both countries, was one of the comprehensive reviews of the art of a capitalistic country that rarely took place in the 1960s. Although the exhibition was a response to the show of Polish abstraction organised in Copenhagen in 1959, it did not limit itself (contrary to the title) to the latest art.

    Danish Contemporary Art

Contrary to the large Danish art exhibition organised by the Central Bureau of Art Exhibitions in 1961, this exhibition covered only the works of the young generation of Danish artists. Its context, as well as the source and authorship of the concept remain elusive.
