Zachęta Project Room

Works Nearing Completion is a project by Łukasz Sosiński, a multimedia artist whose practice often incorporates elements of architecture. The gallery space becomes a workshop to produce a considerably-sized art installation. The Zachęta Project Room audiences will be able to observe the construction process and participate in the subsequent stages of building the work. The artist deliberately draws the viewers’ attention to the “process”, the key-word in contemporary art discourse. Yet Sosiński treats this term with a pinch of salt, positioning himself as a worker who carries out a commissioned task on the basis of a concluded agreement:

“By virtue of the contract concluded between Łukasz Sosiński and the Zachęta Project Room – the inviting institution – the artist undertakes the obligation to carry out the project Works Nearing Completion between the 18th and the 22nd of January 2016 at the seat of the gallery in ul. Gałczyńskiego 3 in Warsaw. Throughout five working days (Monday–Friday), the artist works for eight hours a day during the gallery opening times, between noon and 8 pm. The purpose of his work is to construct a considerably-sized spatial installation in the exhibition hall on the ground floor of the building. By virtue of the contract, the Zachęta Project Room accepts the obligation to purchase and transport all necessary materials, make available the tools that are indispensable to produce the installation, provide technical assistance and pay an artist fee. The artist accepts the obligation to pursue intensive technical and physical work and to use best efforts to conclude the work in time stipulated in the contract (40 working hours). During the project implementation stage, the gallery is open for viewers, the employees engage in their regular duties, and the completed installation remains on display throughout the following weekend”.

Łukasz Sosiński – born in 1981 in Warsaw. He graduated from Intermedia at University of Arts in Poznań in 2010. He started his PHD at the same University in 2013. He lives and works in Warsaw. He has been collaborating with Wschód Gallery since 2015.
