The Kama Sokolnicka exhibition is a presentation of the newest works by the Wrocław artist. In the collages from the cycle Dissapoint of View presented in Project Kordegarda and two series of paintings, Sokolnicka moves in areas well known from her earlier works, at the same time opening up new themes. The title of the series of collages the artist conceives as indicating “a point of view from which everything looks disappointing.” Subtly composed, monochromatic works on paper succeed in showing this disappointment in action, albeit with a humorous, even auto-ironic distance. The artist cuts and tears the reproductions used in them carelessly, or even cruelly, causing photographs – usually a wide window on the world – to become in these works a narrow chasm through which at best can be seen just a fragment of the whole. The motifs of frames, shutters and view-finders that run through Kama Sokolnicka’s work build up a feeling of lack that demands from viewers that they complete the narratives with their own stories.

The gloom or anxiety present in the collages corresponds with the painting series shown at the exhibition. Cubic Structures are modernist buildings/constructions painted on plywood illuminated by an uncertain light source or worryingly decomposed. The paintings from the cycle Gloom with a View, specially prepared for the presentation in Project Kordegarda, in their turn make reference to suspense and Freud’s concept of the unconscious. The canvases, that cause one to think of films such as Hitchcock’s Rear Window or Antonioni’s Blow Up, present neutral fragments of suburban architecture, while at the same time suggesting the existence of a secret, or a hidden crime, that no doubt an attentive viewer will uncover.

Kama Sokolnicka – born in 1978 in Wrocław. A graduate of the Graphic Department of the Wrocław Academy of the Fine Arts. Lives and works in Wrocław.
A creative scholarship amongst others at the European Centre of Contemporary Artistic Activities in Strasbourg; and a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2011). In her works, she principally deals with processes linked with cities, with images as a function of memory, emotion, perception and the need to orient oneself in relation to one’s surroundings, but also the phenomenon of horror vacui. Making use of different media, she analyses the relations between space, people and objects.

Selected individual exhibitions: 2011 – reduced model, Galeria Wozownia, Toruń; 2009 – On Whiteness, the Elipse and Boredom, BWA Studio, Wrocław; 2007 – Relations/microstatics, Galeria Entropia, Wrocław; 2005 –  Defensive Gears, Kolonia Artystów, Stocznia Gdańska.

Works created under a Ministry of Culture and National Heritage grant
