Shortly after the artist’s death, his friends organised an exhibition at Foksal Gallery in accordance with his original concept of ‘capturing the globe in a single moment’. Targowski’s black-and-white photographs depicted ordinary places in our surroundings, such as urban landscapes, construction sites, suburbs, rubbish dumps and housing estates — loca- tions without distinctive features. Spread over several years, the exhibition annexed the entire gallery space quite literally: 3,500 prints, each meas- uring 18 × 24 cm, were affixed to the floor and walls, completely filling the interior. The result was a cohesive photographic environment.

Zygmunt Targowski (1941–1971) – photographer associated with the avant-garde art scene of the 1960s. He created black-and-white photographic series documenting anonymous, often overlooked fragments of urban and industrial landscapes. Author of the concept of ‘capturing the entire globe in a single moment’. His posthumous exhibition at the Foksal Gallery (1971) took the form of a total photographic environment.
