My presentation at Współczesna Gallery is the third in a series of exhibitions that I have planned at various venues across Europe. These exhibitions aim to confront viewers with textile materials and draw attention to their inherent ambiguity.
Our relationship with the objects around us is clouded by a profound blindness brought about by habit. What we already know about an object often prevents us from truly seeing it. I want to challenge the assumptions associated with textile materials. According to the widely accepted convention, the equation is as follows: textile = applied art.
My exhibition at Współczesna Gallery is not a presentation of individual works. Instead, I have created a series of situations into which the viewers is immersed.
These situations unfold from the moment of crossing the threshold.
Situation one:
Ten woven compositions in a tightly configured arrangement. Each piece may have its own visual value. However, the goal is for the viewer to experience the collective effect of all ten pieces. I therefore consider the whole as a single object. Standing within the installation, the viewer is meant to experience tactile sensations alongside visual ones.
Situation two:
Objects are lying on the floor of the empty gallery space. The viewer sees a temporary phase in the object’s existence: a halted process of material spreading outwards.
Situation three:
In the passageway: a configuration of ropes and cables beginning outside the wall that bounds the gallery space. Here, too, the viewer sees a particular phase of the system’s existence — a temporary state. The joined ends of ropes and cables remain in active motion.
The above remarks are intended to offer guidance on how to approach the presentation, but do not cover all its themes. The time to pass through the exhibition and absorb the impressions should not exceed five minutes.
