Publication preview: Barbara Kasten. Post-abstraction

Publication accompanying the exhibition Barbara Kasten: Post-Abstraction is the first publication of such scope devoted to the work of the American artist to be prepared in this part of Europe. The book presents six decades of Barbara Kasten’s practice, exploring the relationships between photography, sculpture, architecture, and light.
An important thread of the publication concerns the artist’s connections with Poland and her encounter with the Polish school of artistic textile. In the early 1970s, as a recipient of a Fulbright–Hays fellowship, Kasten undertook a residency in the studio of Magdalena Abakanowicz in Poznań. This experience shaped her understanding of the image as a relationship between object, space, and light.
The book will include texts by the exhibition’s curator Agnieszka Pindera, Professor David Crowley, and Dr Virginija Vitkienė; a chronology prepared by Alex Klein; and an interview with the artist conducted by Cole Akers. The publication is complemented by an extensive selection of images of Barbara Kasten’s works, ranging from early sculptural pieces to photographic compositions constructed from mirrors, geometric forms, and light.
The publication appears in a bilingual Polish–English edition.
