Zachęta Project Room

The exhibition presents films created by Wojciech Gilewicz in recent years during his travels to Asia and the United States. Showing painting and performative interventions in urban space, sometimes in nature, the films are not so much documentations of artistic actions as autonomous impressions though, paradoxically, of a very well thought-out structure and composition. Gilewicz shoots the footage himself using a tripod-mounted film camera; this is part of the performance which is an almost guerrilla-like action, sucking in the many unpredictable events offered by street life. The footage so obtained is then edited.

‘I’m presently preoccupied with creating what you could call reality traps’, says Gilewicz. The featured films test the viewer’s perception as he or she tries to identify the painting pieces ingeniously embedded by the artist in urban tissue or interprets the different scenes, where elements of artistic intervention merge with the harsh realities of the landscape and the artist’s actions with people’s daily enterprises. In particular, Gilewicz studies work as a fundamental component of human existence as well as examining the life of social outcasts and their survival techniques. This clear emphasis on social issues is an important aspect of Gilewicz’s films.

The artist has initiated a waste paper-collecting project at the Zachęta Project Room. Proceeds from the sale of the recycling paper will go towards the publication of a future catalogue presenting the abovementioned films. During the two months of the exhibition, viewers will have a chance not only to demonstrate their pro-environmental attitude by contributing waste paper but also to use it creatively as part of activities proposed by the artist.
